the registered trademark of Sumitomo Chemical for its
PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) resin, manufactured
in Japan and Singapore.
PMMA is a kind of thermoplastic resin, which is flammable and
also soluble in an organic solvent. Due to its outstanding characteristics,
such as exceptional clarity, weather resistance and mechanical
properties as well as appealing luster among other transparent
plastics, PMMA is also commonly know as “The Queen of
Plastics.” |

| We have now entered an era in which greater importance
is being placed on environmental issues. In addition to
its benign physical properties as a methacrylate resin,SUMIPEX® contributes to conservation of resources
through its prolonged and incomparable weather resistance,
serving its many applications for long periods of time.
Moreover,SUMIPEX® at high yields can be
reduced to their monomer form through thermal decomposition,
then chemically recycled and utilized as raw materials
for new resin production. Furthermore, no particularly
harmful gases, such as dioxins, are produced when waste
resins are incinerated, as the resins do not contain halogens.
In addition, under normal combustion conditions, SUMIPEX®
breaks down completely into water and carbon dioxide,
thus adding only minimum burden to the environment. People
have been using methacrylate resins ever since the beginning
of their commercial production in the 1940s. This versatile
plastic is still being used in myriad applications, even
into the 21st century – the century of the environment
– due to its outstanding characteristics. |
